What can a college degree do for me?

I remember when my parents said that I've never go back to college. I believed them, for awhile. I returned when I was 35! I actually became intrigued about education and wanted to learn more. After I got my bachelor's degree, I returned for my master's, and I'm currently studying for my doctorate. They say if you love what you do, it'll drive you to greatness. I found a passion for knowledge and learning.

For anybody questioning the importance of a college degree and can't decide whether ought to earn on, I say, "GO FOR IT!" With financial aid and help on campus willing to help you, even during times of doubt, there is no reason why you can't achieve your goals of getting a college degree. If you have the desire inside, it will happen. I can guarantee it.

A willingness to watch to further yourself should be there, but if that doesn't motivate you -- how about money? Research shows that people with a college degree earn more. Just take a look at some of these figures:

• 1.2 million over a lifetime is the average earned by those with a high school diploma.
• 1.6 million over a lifetime is the average earned by those with a 2 year associates degree
• 2.1 million over a lifetime is the average earned by those with a 4 year bachelors degree

You see, people with a four year college degree earn almost twice as much as those with a simple high school diploma.

Why do people with college degrees make more than those with high school diplomas?

Simply put... dedication. An employer looks at somebody with any sort of diploma as somebody who stuck around and didn't give up or drop out when the going got tough. They want their employees to remain strong even the pressure is on and those who lack a diploma, often show a lack of discipline and inner strength. Of course, a high school diploma against those who dropped out of high school would look good but not as good as a college diploma against somebody who had a high school diploma. That being said, those with associate degrees fear bachelors and bachelors fear masters. The pyramid always reaches for the top.

But I'll spend more paying for my college degree,, than I'll make!

Did you know that according to recent students, the average student pays about $9,000 per year in college tuition?

Is $9,000 a year worth it? Let's crunch some numbers, shall we? Over a four year period using student loans plus interest, you'll spend about $36,000 total in tuition. Count up the difference in earnings, as we discussed above, during an average lifetime and you're talking about a return of $900,000 in your investment. If somebody told you tomorrow that you could turn $36,000 into $900,000 would you do it? Sure you would!

BUT a college degree can be worth more than extra money in your wallet. It's a chance to meet like minds in your field and develop friendships that you will use forever. I've met many great people during my time at college, people that I have count on to reference me for related job openings... great connections to have on hand.

College also gave me a much different perspective on the world, taking in so many insights and options form others. I really do appreciate  the time I spent earning my college degree.

BUT what about those who never got their college degree but lead a life of success?

There are many stories of successful people who have gone onto have great careers without a college degree. Rapper Kayne West was a college dropout and so was billionaire mogul Bill Gates.

Some argue that college puts to many ideas into your head and you loose a sense of creativity which is where success comes form. We can still argue that with a college degree, it eliminates the constant need to have to impress those around you, biding for their attention. I know of many people who did not get their college degree, become successful, but still regret it because the know of the hardship it took to make it in life without one. Hardship that may have been slightly reduced with a college degree.

It's also harder to move without a degree. People who lack a college degree with often stay in the same position for longer periods of time. I know of this name named Tommy who worked at a local factory. Tommy was hired right before the company started to demand that future employees have degrees. Over the years, many employees at the factory have retired or found new jobs. Tommy remains the only employee at the company without a degree and as the company discusses layouts, he starts to see what separates himself from the rest of the guys - and it's his lack of a college degree.

Is Tommy as qualified as his coworkers to do their job? Sure he is. BUT even Tommy knows that he lacks something that they have.

I want a college degree, but I feel l like the drive!

As I discussed above, a college degree can be extremely tough. It's a long road and two years or four years or in my case, eight years, can be a long journey. I recommend putting a goal close to you; to help you achieve this dream. I myself, found a little bit of inspiration with a fake diploma. I had one ordered that looked just like the degree handed out by my college with my own name on it, my degree, my future graduation date, and more. I hand my fake college degree framed up on the wall above my dorm room throughout the four years or trying to earn my bachelors degree. Whenever I had my doubts, I looked at that bachelor degree fake to drive me to another day.
